    Description

    David Douglas Duncan
    Pablo Picasso's Eyes 1957
Duncan once said his favorite person to photograph was Pablo Picasso. The two met in southern France in 1956, and were friends for the remaining 17 years of Picasso’s life. In 1957, Duncan published The Private World of Pablo Picasso, the first of eight books about the great artist. For the photograph of Picasso’s eyes, Duncan cropped the original image to achieve a dramatic effect.
    Details:
This press print was made under permission of Douglas Duncan to promote his photo exhibition that toured Japan in 1990 and 1991 (see poster above). It is over 30 years old and was intended for circulation to media organizations for print articles or television broadcast. It was not made from the original negative, but instead from a master negative made specially for making multiple prints.
    Glossy RC gelatin silver print.
    - Photograph date: 1957
    - Print date: 1990.
    Size:
    8 x 10 inches (202 mm x 254 mm).
    Condition:
This has a few finger dents near the top center edge. On the reverse, a portion of the print's surface layer was lifted off when tape was carelessly removed. This happened years ago but has since been repaired by a professional archivist. Also affixed to the reverse is cellophane tape that has layout inscriptions in pen ink.
