Description
You are bidding on a large original antique print from an 1880s illustrated journal. The quality of the printing from that era was exceptional. It depicts a wild bison hunt in the Red River Valley area (Manitoba Canada, North Dakota and Minnesota). The Marquis of Lorne is shown taking the final kill shot with a rifle at a distance of 10 feet. Presumably the animal has been wounded and run down, and this is the coup de grace. A Native American FIrst Nation Indian guide watches, as another guide instructs the Marquis where to shoot.
John George Edward Henry Douglas Sutherland Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll, KG KT GCMG GCVO VD PC (6 August 1845 – 2 May 1914), usually better known by the courtesy title Marquess of Lorne, by which he was known between 1847 and 1900, was a British nobleman and was the fourth Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883.
